My history teacher is giving me such a hard time. What should i do?

  • my history teacher is being really awkward with me. I gave in my coursework and he said it was good, but then the next lesson he gave our course works back and told me to do it all again so i did, and i did it to the best it could be, he then took it in, next lesson gave it me back and said it needs more work on it, so yet again i did, and then the NEXT lesson he gave it me back AGAIN this time not giving me any reasons why it was wrong, and that same lesson people where talking and i wasn't i got on with my work and he came up to me and yelled "WOULD YOU SHUT UP AND GET ON WITH YOUR WORK!" i wasn't even talking you can really tell he hates me and i haven't a clue why. I think im a good student and i get on with my work well. He favours a lot of people in my class if they live by him

  • You've ask the question of the meaning of life. You are lucky to have this problem now. As you go through life, you will always have to deal with people like your history teacher. It could be in college, in your neighborhood, at the place where you work. Believe me its a part of life. The earlier that you know and learn how to deal with these types the better off you will be. Yes, in this situation he holds the power. Yes, people always believe an adult over a child. You really don't want to fight him head on. You probably will never be one of his favorites either. I would approach him after class, or after school. Tell him that you have tried, but just can't quite get it. Ask him if he could give you some direction in the area that you are lacking. Always be polite and make him feel important, as he is the teacher. If you are near a loud bunch in class, maybe you could ask him to move your seat up front. That way you could avoid blame for talking too. Give it a shot. If nothing at all works, talk to your parents, maybe it is time to change classes and teachers. You could get someone worse. Chances are you'll run into another one of these characters soon enough. Give it your best shot.

  • What grade are you in? I don't know what you mean by coursework, but I would not accept work with so many typos. You should use a writing software plan that checks for grammar, voice, etc.

If you are young, take a parent. I would make an appointment to see the teacher, not in his/her room, if possible. Start with something like, "I am having trouble with your class. I hope it is not my fault because I really like history. Would you suggest what I should do?"

You might try talking to someone who is doing well. Ask what you are doing in class that is making the teacher angry with you? Maybe you could ask to sit next to a good student (from the teacher's perspective).

  • Ignore him. When he is mean to you, just say in your head, "He is a ***************************************"... If he brings down your marks, report him, for teacher abuse.

  • OK, if this is coursework for your GCSE then nobody is supposed to give you any help to make sure it's your best work, they aren't meant to tell you there are spelling mistakes, factual errors or anything, but they can read it and give it back to you and advise you to try it again - it sounds like that's what your teacher is doing.

He might think you're capable of much better quality work than you've handed in, and you're feeling tense because you know you're under pressure to "perform" and get good marks.

All I can say is that you should look again at the question and make sure you've fully answered it to the best of your ability. Make sure your spelling is spot on, make sure your grammar is good and you've used all the right terms - there are "key words" to include aren't there? Have you included them?

Check the framework, make sure you've complied with it and if you're asked to reference sources make sure you've done that properly too.

What seems to be little mistake might cost you a lot more marks than you imagine.

Most of all, try reading it through as if somebody else has written it, see what you think of it then - be critical of your own work. It's a really hard thing to do, but it will help you in the future.

It might be a bit too much to take in right now, but you could look at the QCA site and see if there's anything there to help you, but don't be tempted to use any of the answer bank type of sites. The link I've given is to the QCA site, with further links to an "Exams doctor" which may be useful, I haven't checked it out.

    Good luck.
